Dead authority from a time when metaphysics had no rhyme
Minds where reason would have been the ultimate crime
So bow down to the imagined authority where obedience is priority
Divinity moved from the mountains to the planets, then the stars and beyond that fraternity

The great defeat was when Man learned to read
For now the reason of Aristotle would become freed
The evil to think and scale reality’s objective summit
Everyman is an island when it comes to deciding whether to think or submit

Betrayal was from within humanity
Fear rose up and superstition took on personality
The ultimate bogeyman of infinity in hell
The estimate of punishment if you were a spiritual ne’er-do-well

Theist and humanist decried the individual for selfishness
For divinity and collectivity was surely greater than individuality?
Both sides of the same coin they fought to power and the result; catastrophe
The rational mind the scapegoat of irrational power’s empty
